TWR Korea 북방선교방송은 하나님께서 북한 주민들의 영적 필요를 채우도록 부르셨다는 믿음으로 시작된 선교단체입니다. 북방선교방송의 목표는 북한 주민들이 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 듣고, 그리스도의 사랑을 알고 받아들이도록 돕는 것입니다.
북한은 최빈국이면서 매우 엄격한 통제 사회입니다. 북한 주민들은 경제나 사회적 영역에서 억압받고 있을 뿐만 아니라 신앙의 영역에서는 더욱 크게 억압받고 있습니다. 겉으로는 종교의 자유를 보장하는 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 정부 정책에 반하는 모든 종교를 탄압하고 있습니다. 따라서 기독교적 메시지나 복음을 전하는 것 또한 철저하게 금지하고 있습니다.
북한은 ‘폐쇄국가’로 분류됩니다. 폐쇄국가란 국민의 자유와 무역, 관광 등을 철저히 통제하는 국가입니다. 이런 나라에서는 정부의 감시를 피해 선교사들이 입국하기가 거의 불가능하기 때문에 직접 복음을 전하기가 매우 어렵습니다. 이러한 폐쇄국가나 물리적으로 접근이 어려운 지역에 복음을 전하기 위해 TWR 국제 본부가 설립되었습니다. 단파 라디오는 이런 환경에서도 효과적으로 복음을 전할 수 있는 도구입니다. 현장에 선교사를 직접 파송하지 못해도 청취자들이 방송으로 하나님의 말씀을 들을 수 있기 때문입니다.
단파방송은 북한에서도 복음을 전하기에 효과적인 수단입니다. 아무리 북한 정부가 방해전파를 보내서 해외 방송 신호를 막으려고 해도 모든 신호를 완벽히 차단하기란 불가능하기 때문입니다. 게다가 신호를 방해하는 데는 막대한 전력이 필요한데, 전기 공급이 어려운 북한에서는 이를 지속적으로 감당하기 어렵습니다. 결국 북한 전역을 금속지붕으로 덮지 않는 한, 북한에서도 단파 라디오만 있으면 복음을 들을 수 있습니다.
그렇기 때문에 북방선교방송은 계속하여 단파 방송을 북한으로 보내고 있습니다. 북한 정부도 모든 신호를 차단할 수 없다는 사실을 알고 있기에 정부의 허가가 없는 단파 라디오 사용을 금지했습니다. 북한 내부에서는 단파 라디오를 구입할 수 없고 소지하는 것만으로도 처벌 대상이 됩니다.
이러한 북한 실정에 맞춰 북방선교방송은 단파 방송 제작과 송출을 비롯해 단파 라디오를 북한에 보급하여 북한 주민들이 방송을 들을 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다.

Why TWR Korea Does Missions Through Radio
TWR Korea is a faith-based missions-oriented organization that saw a great need in North Korea and felt called by God to work towards filling that need. Our goal is to spread the gospel of grace to those in North Korea that they may come to know and accept the Love of Christ.
North Korea is a poverty-stricken country, with a strict and controlling government. The oppression of the North Korean people is not merely economical but extends to matters of faith as well. While nominally the North Korean government supposedly protects religious freedom, any religion other than the ones that align with governmental values, are severely restricted and persecuted. As a result, the North Korean government does not allow the message of Christ and the hope of the gospel to be shared with and among the people under its control.
North Korea is categorized as a “closed country”. A closed country is a place that strictly controls the freedoms of its people, and the allowance of trade and tourism. Closed countries are hard to spread the gospel in, as it is extremely difficult to get missionaries into the country under the government’s radar. TWR international was created with these kinds of places in mind, working to spread the gospel both in closed countries and places that are logistically hard to physically reach. Shortwave radio is an effective way to spread the gospel in both contexts allowing listeners to hear the word of God even when we struggle to physically place missionaries there. Radio works in countries like North Korea as well because even with the massive undertaking to try and jam the incoming signals, they cannot block them all, and those they block are not continually blocked as jamming the signals requires a significant amount of electricity which is both precious and expensive. So, aside from a giant metal dome encapsulating the country, shortwave radio waves can reach the people who have the radios to receive them.
Since radio gives us an effective way to share the gospel in North Korea, that is the medium we choose to use. Because the North Korean government is aware of how they cannot block all radio waves from entering their country they have instead chosen to ban the use of non-governmental shortwave radios. Since shortwave radios cannot be purchased in North Korea, and the possession of them is illegal, we work to smuggle them into the country and teach those who receive them how to hide and operate the radios.
